ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Alberta Society of Artists is proud to present the group exhibition “Rock Stars: Time-Space Capsules as I Imagine…” featuring the work of Alberta artists; Sylvie Pinard.

Sylvie Pinard’s, Rock Stars, exhibition draws a parallel between geological architecture and human society by using geode – a unique geological formation created by a layering process through time – as metaphor. Geodes reflect the chemical and physical conditions of the enviroment with their experiences and environment.

The coexistence of individuals defines our society and reminds me of a constellation of geodes, all in different sizes, colours and positions. This series visually describes the perpetual changes in humanity, the layersof earth, planets and the universe. The constellations of geodes invite the viewer to remeber that we can make colourful or conscious choices to pave a better future. As individuals, we are all part of the fabric of time and space.

You are invited to attend the Exhibition’s Opening Reception on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Light refreshments will be provided and Artists will be in attendance.

We also would like to welcome you to attend Sylvie’s Artist Talk Saturday, May 27, 2023 starting at 2:00 pm.

The Artist

As a young adult, in the pursuit of scientific and academic studies, I put aside my love of art to obtain a Ph.D. in geology with a specialization in micropaleontology. This path led me to remarkably interesting places such as the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Alberta, where I eventually put down roots. These environments allowed me to reconnect with nature and observe beauty through colours, harmonies, shapes/forms and textures, which then stimulated the development of my artistic styles and ideals. Nature reopened an art door. Thus, art and science engage in a harmonious dialogue. It became clear to me that creativity was important to reach a life balance, and I realized that being an artist allows me to be as creative as possible.

My favourite part of being an artist is the freedom to explore possibilities and what it means to be human. It makes me feel alive. And that’s why I returned partially to the world of art in 2002, and I expanded my palette to new media and developed new techniques. Engaging in art leads me toward a better understanding of what I am and of the world around me. Art, for me, is complementary to science and helps me to maintain an equilibrium. Since 2015, I have focused on my goal to explore different subjects, and different styles and continue to learn about colours and shapes.
