ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Alberta Society of Artists is pleased to present the solo exhibition “He Was Taken Up Into The Sky” featuring the work of Alberta artist Samantha Harrison.

“He Was Taken Up Into the Sky speaks of the potential for perceiving divinity within the human form, and the ways in which people – even when flawed – can be powerful, impactful, and immensely beautiful beings. Most of the portraits are a part of a large body of work depicting individuals as deities of primarily Greco-Roman origin. They aim to match each model to different figures based on a moment of perceived similarity, while also deliberately mismatching the models in other aspects of their visual characteristics. The goal of these paintings is to honour each individual, to engage with ancient stories contemporarily and inclusively, and to provide viewers with an opportunity to reflect upon the stories associated with each character.”
